For those who love hip-hop but long for a more poetic approach–scratch that, for those who even just LIKE hip-hop but wish that lyricists took more risks with their verbiage, dive into the catalog of Mr. Aesop Rock. Originally a Long Islander but now a San Francisco resident, Aesop Rock writes his dense, allusive, remarkably inventive lyrics with a sense for wordplay that would make Cole Porter blush and inspire Eminem to double-stack his internal rhymes.

One of his breakthrough releases was the Daylight EP (Definitive Jux), in which he hung a pair of variations on the same lyrical framework: “Daylight” and “Night Light,” each with different musical accompaniment courtesy of producer Blockhead. You can dive into the smartness of it, about how self-reflexive and meta it is for “Night Light” to twist and double back and refer to “Daylight,” and about the way certain lines bob and weave and pop up in different songs across his albums.

Or, more highly recommended, you can just lay back and take in the sound and the flow of it. It’s a flood of intriguing ideas and you’ll be rewarded. The imagery is brutal and original at every step, with dark humor and sharply drawn flashes of social commentary. While these records have earned him fans among indie rock’s heaviest-hitting wordsmiths (including John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats), they’ve also earned him a great deal of respect from the underground hip-hop community.
